Personal mentorship

Mentoring for men who are done arguing with their worst hour.

I'm Ryan L. Rinehart — Retired Navy Veteran, author of The Council of Betters and The Bully I Needed. This is mentoring, not counseling or therapy. If you're in crisis, call or text 988 (Veterans press 1).

Steady: Presence and Mentorship for Men

Steady is a short course for men who are done arguing with their worst hour. It's five plain-talk lessons, each with one short video and one printable page you use that week. No pep talk, and no promise to fix your life. Just a few tools I use myself and with the men I mentor. This is mentorship, not therapy. If you're in crisis, call or text 988. Veterans, press 1.

  1. The Voice at One in the Morning When the house goes quiet, a voice shows up and tries to turn one bad hour into your whole name. This lesson helps you notice that voice and ask whose it is.
  2. Pick Your Council You already have a council in your head, but you never voted for it. This lesson shows you how to pick a few better voices, give each one a vote, and keep your worst hour from naming you.
  3. Builder or Tyrant Some hard men build you, and some just need you small. Four questions help you tell them apart, and help you check which one you are when you're the one asking.
  4. The Hour After You Storm Out The meeting isn't the test. The hour after is. This lesson gives you a one-hour plan, so you keep the true sentence and don't spend the night turning it into a grudge.
  5. What My Navy Mentors Taught Me About Showing Up Presence comes down to being steady, being on time, and owning the hard conversation. This one is about the men who did that for me, and how you can do it for someone else.

What this is not

Mentoring is not counseling or therapy. I'm not a licensed therapist or counselor, and I don't diagnose or treat anything. If you're working with a counselor, mentoring can sit alongside it. It doesn't replace it.

I keep what you share private, unless someone's safety is at risk.

If you're in crisis or thinking about hurting yourself, call or text 988 (Suicide & Crisis Lifeline). Veterans, press 1.

Start with a message

Tell me which option you're looking at and a line or two about what's going on. I read every request myself and reply within two business days. You don't have to put anything in writing you'd rather say out loud.
